What operating system do you have currently?
What do you see when you do: START > RUN > cmd > OK > path > ENTER ? if you get the command line to display environment variables, then look for the line that reads "
PATHEXT=" to see if
.EXE file extension is listed or not.
Also open registry editor (START > RUN > regedit > OK) and browse to this location to see what is listed:

If you have XP/Vista/7, you could download the attached zip file, extract it and the double-click on the registry file to merge it to your system which would fix if the related file association was the cause. As usual, I recommend making a backup of at least the entire
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by right-clicking on the hive and then selecting "Export" before merging the registry patch...just in case.
