I think I have a virus and my computer keeps running this thing called "scanner."
It says I have to do "defragmentation" but then it tells me I need to purchase a license. Is this some scam to get me to fork over my personal info? I can't tell if it's legit or not. Advice please!

Sounds like one of the millions of pieces of very similar, but all slightly different, kinds of malware out there. Boot into "safe mode with networking". Download, install, and update the free program at Malwarebytes. Run a full scan. That'll probably knock out whatever it is.

There are three sources I use to check a site:

http://onlinelinkscan.com/
http://www.avg.com.au/resources/web-page-scanner/

The above two report this site as OK, but one yields:

http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/scanner.com

"McAfee TrustedSource web reputation analysis found potential security risks with this site. Use with extreme caution."

Since there are free defragmentation programs available, including the one likely installed with your operating system, I would highly suspect a scam.

I recommend Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org/) as well, and a decent virus checker such as Microsoft Security Essentials (www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/).

Everyone is familiar with all the fake anti-virus apps out there that take over your PC and try to scare you into paying for them? This is jusy a new variant of that, a fake hard drive tool trying to scare you into thinking your drive is bad to get you to pay for it, expect to see more posts on them.
