Windows Media (server, how to, connect, error)

Somehow the Windows Media player on my computer has become inactive or it doesnt connect. It seems I can play a video off you tube or some other site if its embedded in the site. But those times when it opens in a different window it says unable to connect or proxy server error. Any suggestions how to fix?

The easiest thing to do rather than spend a couple of hours of "try this, try that" is to get Videolan VLC.
