But, I have a ReadyNAS Duo that tops out at 2TB/drive, and this has some appeal.
Of course, I don't ahve an emergency and prices are only moving in one direction on drives.
You might want to make sure that your ReadyNAS supports advanced format drives. My ReadyNas Pro didn't last time I checked (which was over a year ago).

Yea, a lot of RAID devices have issues with 4KB sectors on these newer drives.
I know at least the Western Digital AFT can realign the sectors, so that aspect can be covered. That said, not all drives are good for RAID; the low-power ones with power saving aspects tend to be the worst candidates.

WD AFT drives are no good in RAID because they cut the power early in an effort to save power, which causes the RAID device to think the drive dropped out of the array.
This Samsung does not have the realignment jumper. It's still the best green (fastest, lowest power) drive out there.
I still have my 540MB Quantum HD, granted I bought it second hand years ago, it still serves a purpose but slightly a different one. Nowadays, I use it during my oil changes, I jam it under the tire as a stopper so the truck wouldn't move.
My current configuration of 2x150GB WD Raptor still suits my needs to best and the external 300GB HD handles the backup plus the 2x300GB NAS drives but still, having a single 2TB HD is tempting.
Meh. It's a 5400 RPM drive. I wouldn't be doing any serious read\writes from that thing. Might serve as a good storage volume for limited access, but keep it away from my games.

Very correct. It may be big and cheap, but it has no performance.
I just picked up a 1TB drive 7,200 RPM drive w/ 64MB buffer and SATA3 for $99 for a new build. It may have half the storage, but it has WAY more performance.
I still can't get into the SSD's though. I almost bought one to use as a boot/OS drive on a new build, but just couldn't justify the price. The cheapest I saw was a 64GB SATA3 drive for $139.99.
