The DVD burner went out on my wife's Gateway DX series desktop and I want to replace it with this. Newegg.com - LG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD±RW SuperMulti Drive. The question is, do I need to get a SATA cable to install it. The current one came with the computer and says optical drive on it but I cannot tell if it is a SATA one or not. Please help. Thankyou.

Open the case and look, SATA will have a narrow data cable connecting the DVD drive to the motherboard, IDE will be a wide ribbon cable.

If you have an IDE unit - buy another IDE unit. Buying a SATA unit will waste your time an money in this case because it is likely your computer doesn't have SATA ports on the motherboard.

If it has a SATA drive, buy a SATA drive. You will reuse the cable you have already.
