I'm looking at purchasing a computer. After assembling the two computers are nearly identical(Sony and HP). The only difference is the HP has a Radeon HD 4550 and the Sony has a Nvidia 310m. Is this difference worth $125? I'm going to be using the computer for some light gaming and some SolidWorks. Neither are particularly good for either but they are good enough for the level I am using.
It really depends on what you mean by light gaming. The 310 is an entry level card if that is the correct term. Its not particularly good for gaming. The radeon blows it away.Is it worth the extra money? It really depends on you. You could probably meet somewhere in the middle and grab a 9800gtx or something like that off newegg.com 9800gtx still rock and play pretty much anything out there as long as you have the rig to back it.
It looks like 4550 cards sell for around $50-60, although the specific version might be slightly different. So it doesn't sound like it's worth the price difference if you can buy this card for less than $125.
