Encountered this at the library, upon completing my USB flash drive virus scan:

What does this mean?

Also, for some reason the Operating System on the library computers doesn't let me eject my USB flash drive; I have to manually remove it and hope the drive doesn't become corrupted. Could this explain why I'm receiving the above error?

I think Sophos support would be the people to ask, could be any number of reasons.

But what does the error code mean, in layman's terms? What does SAV stand for?

Not an expert but could it mean: Sophos Anti Virus?

Enterprise Console: Sav Interface error 0xa004021a

SAV Interface Error 0xa004021a? - SophosTalk community

Scanning "Memory" returned SAV Interface error 0xa0040202: Scan failed

You could do what NHDave suggested -or- do a Google search to get more information on your error code.....

Follow-up for the OP:

Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: log showing multiple SAV interface errors 0xa0040210

Issue
The workstation log shows multiple scanning errors. These are generated by HIPS scanning:
SAV interface error 0xa0040210: The file could not be accessed
These errors are not propagated to the console.

Sophos product and version

Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+

What to do

You can ignore these errors unless you believe that new or updated files are suspicious.
This does not affect on-access protection. Errors are related to the way HIPS behaviour detection operates.

Technical information
Part of the protection provided by HIPS suspicious behaviour detection, is to monitor secure folders, checking for new or updated files. In most cases these files are added as part of a valid system patch or application. But HIPS scans the files anyway, looking for markers that confirm the file is unlikely to be malicious.
Errors are logged when the new files cannot be scanned because an application - typically the installer - has left the file temporarily inaccessible.

If you need more information or guidance, then please contact technical support.
