I've seen plenty of crap get past MSE but that's true for every other antivirus I've ever seen too. Malwarebytes free version is good at removing stuff after its on your computer.
Maybe you are right. Im running MSE and malwareybyes though. Never had malwareybytes find anything once i installed MSE> Maybe im lucky
I add another +1 to a combination of Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, and Ccleaner. Haven't had a virus in about 3 years. It also helps to run a disk defragmenter about once a month. I just use the basic Microsoft version which works fine for me, but there are others that may be better.
My problem I have found out is not enough memory. I think I will up-grade my ram to 2 or 3 GB's on my laptop. I wonder what the cost would be? Have you any good websites for buying more memory? I have a Toshiba Satellite A205, Intel Pentium Dual, 1.73 Ghz, two core, Ram one GB, 120 hard drive GB's. Total virtual memory 2.68 GB, Available physical memory 261 MB.

Possible causes:
startup overload - Start, Run, type "msconfig" and see what is running
spyware - run anti-spyware programs
corrupted registry - run CCleaner
badly fragmented hard drive - defragment your hard drive
poor security software - check for better options
partially uninstalled programs still hanging in there - install program like RegCure and uninstall uninstalled programs completely
to many windows and full temporary file - Start, Run, type cleanmgr.exe, select C, and click OK
wear and tear of your hardware
viruses - install 2-3 antivirus programs mentioned by members above.

One more thing to add to the list, after couple of Red Bulls, my PC always seem to be running slower for some odd reason!
You and Mensa is correct, most everyone automatically assumes a malicious software infection as the cause of a seemingly slow system, where a number of software and hardware culprits could be the actual reason.
As generic as this may sound, for an issue that suddenly surfaced for the first time, the following is almost always the case:
---> What has/was changed in the system (software or hardware wise) since the last time it was running OK?
Combined with Malwarebytes it works wonderfully well.
I've since changed my opinion. Vista Security 2012 walked past Avast and Malwarebytes like they weren't even there, and I ended up doing a reformat over it. Installed MSE on the wife's laptop now, and so far all is well.

I've learned a long time ago that there really isn't any "good" protection, aside from your own self.
But, MSE seems to be the best I've had. Malwarebytes' doesn't have a real-time scanner in their free version. And, I'm guessing Vista Security 2012 was bundled with the Zero Access rootkit. That family of trojans seems to be hitting 32bit machines *hard* over the past few months.

had XP Security 2012 walk past MSE on my dad's machine a few days ago. If the end user actually allows the app onto the machine there isn't much you can do about it.
