I already have MSE and Malwarebytes, I'm thinking of downloading CCleaner as well - is this ok or will it cause conflicts?

CCleaner is not an A/V or anti-malware tool.

People tend to forget things. You'd be surprised!

The so-called research had nothing to do with that list of 18. Clearly you don't know how to read properly.

I've run a combination of AVG/ Spybot Search and Destroy and more recently Avast/Spybot Search and Destroy for years (I'd say about 5 years with AVG free and 3 with Avast at a guess) without any issues. I keep Spybot up to date, Avast blocks any web threats you come across, but I always equate av/ anti malware programs to the locks on your car. If someone REALLY wants in, they'll get in.

Because I'm sure some will ask I switched to AVG because I didn't like a lot of the features that AVG was adding. I like protection that is very unobtrusive, but still informative. Once a day Avast pops up and tells me it's updated and then disappears to be quietly vigilant, if I happen on a website that has potentially harmful files (you can find them on website that don't advertise naked women or 'free' software, it happens) it pops up and says "I found this, didn't let it in, have a nice day". Avg was getting too "in your face" for my liking, and the free version was getting harder and harder to find whenever I installed it for someone.

That being said I never had a problem with either program's actual protection features. Spybot for an extra layer of protection, and I keep that up to date and immunized about every week.
