My husband wants to set up a program to track investments. Nothing fancy, just something he can update occasionally. We have MS Office on two computers and I've been using Word tables for a long time. His little netbook didn't come with Office and we don't want to buy it just to get that Table function. He doesn't write word documents and our days of making Power Point slides are far behind us.

Is there something simple I can get to make a text table for him? Thanks.

Google Docs spreadsheet?

Doing the tracking on a spreadsheet would save him having to do the multiplication and addition.

Plus, it's free!

My parents use Yahoo Finance to track their portfolio.

I use Google Docs also, it is wonderful, we keep all our bills in a spreadsheet and when they're due, password info, etc (not full passwords of course, just "hints" that I can use to figure out what they are). Works great!

I agree that a spreadsheet (Excel) is the next logical step.

If you want to continue to use Word or migrate to Excel, you can also use Skydrive for free. Same concept as Google docs, but with MS Office.

Thanks, y'all. I looked at Google Docs tonight. I'll give it a try in the morning...if the snowstorm cooperates with our internet service.

You can install Open Office as standalone:

OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite

Another possibility is export your document as HTML from Word. It will only be readable on his computer. Won't be able to edit at least the way you can in Word.
