In addition to ones already mentioned (AVG, AdAware, Cute PDF), it's Open Office, hands down. You don't have to go out and buy Microsoft Office, when OO will do it all - spreadsheet, word processing, presentation (like PowerPoint), database management, etc. It will read all Microsoft Office files, as well as other formats.
I also like Thunderbird for email, Filezilla for FTP client, and Coppermine for my online photo gallery.

Well I would say a favorite is TIGHTVNC, a varient of VNC, which works nicely over low bandwidth (i.e., dial up lines). It's a remote control type tool...
My new favorite freeware is VideoLAN (aka VLC). It's a video, audio player that plays everything. What's nice about it is that it can stream, it can play dvds either from your dvd-rom or copied to a computer.
I think where I am getting stuck is when it wants to know my e-mail address. Do I give it my old one? Is there something xxxx@thunderbird.com? I have yahoo going in through outlook right now, but I have 4 e-mail accounts. I would like to see all of them in Thunderbird.
