My computer is making a sound that I only hear when I plug in hardware. You know the sound you hear when you plug in a keyboard or printer telling you the computer has connected. This sound is now on all the time and I'm not doing anything to cause it. My computer is six years old and did stay on almost 360 days of year so it's lasted a long time for a Compaq.

Thanks, John
Open the computer and clean it all out including the fan and replace the fan if need be. I have a 10 year old Compaq that still works great, a wee bit slow obviously because of age and no upgrades but still works as a back up and my server.
I just done all cleaning about a month ago and cleaned the three fans. Upgraded to 2 GB's of memory. Had to replace my keyboard with a new one because it shorted out I think after cleaning. Just stop working. My new one has a USB hook-up instead of old plug in.
Not that it's necessarily the same problem, but I had a Lenovo given to me because it was doing the high-pitched beeping noise thing and the guy that owned it just went and bought a new one. Turns out, a reset of the CMOS fixed the issue.
