Hey Dale, there's an old phrase.....

SH*T HAPPENS

This thread reminds me of one of those cop video's where the guy goes berserk in his truck getting a speeding ticket. The truck rocking back and forth as the guy is yelling, the cop standing alongside the truck all calm and peaceful.

Whenever something goofy happens whether to my computer, car, TV or whatever I blame it on a stray photon from the sun, take it as just one of those things and calmly move on....

A piece of metal make me angry? Don't think so....

Well, it's actually not your business, but since you asked, I watch them at a place where I don't and can't have anything but a portable DVD player.

The why really doesn't matter.

The question was a relevant one. Sometimes people do things the wrong way, troubleshooting remotely doesn't work if we don't know what environment we're working in.

Your rude and unappreciative response is quite telling of your persona. I think I'm done here. Go pay someone to help you.

Good luck.

Ah yeasss, the sure signs of summer and heat.

I have one computer sitting beside me that runs Win 98 and connects to the internet. It hasn't had a virus in the over ten years it has been in operation and it hasn't been on auto-update. Use a restricted hosts file, sit on a local network, and don't go to every porno site on the net and chances of a virus drop substantially. Personally, I found the:
"Also, it IS up to you, if you want to use 98, go for it. You're gonna have a bad time, though." comment to be a little over-the-top, even though I agree there are better ways to do things.

Firefox has been disabling stuff behind my back, and I agree that Dale has a point. Sometimes software sits on the razors-edge of working or not, and the wild panic to constantly update stuff to defeat an obscure virus found on three computers in East Bumm-fauk, without thoroughly evaluating any broken processes is lazy and stupid.

I learned YEARS ago not to be the (unpaid beta-tester) early adopter of software. With auto-updates, such caution goes sailing out the window.

No, the why is none of your business. The why is never anyone's business. If I wanted an alternative to what I'm doing, I would have asked for an alternative. You'll just have to trust me on that.

As far as you being finished helping me, apparently you missed my post where a sys restore fixed the problem.

Thanks, anyway.

I would almost sell my soul for Windows 98.

Doing a system restore will probably mean the problem will come back, after the updates are installed that were negated by the restore. I'll plan to ignore the next thread.

You are out of your mind and this comes from probably the biggest WIN98 SE fan you will ever find. Windows7 blows it so far out of the water it couldn't get back with a cigarette boat.
WIN7 is not your problem.
WIN98 wouldn't come close to resolving your problem.

And I do have to wonder why you are doing the things you do. Don't be pissed because someone asked why you do what you want to do.

"O god I HATE computers but I HAVE to watch YouTube videos offline"
If you can have a portable DVD player then buy some DVDs. lol

You people are basically typical of know-it-all self-imposed tech experts.

Nowhere did I say Win 98 would fix my problem. I merely said I loved it and miss it.

Mensa, why would you ignore me? I thanked you. Nicely, I might add.

Why not buy the DVD's? Where can I find a DVD with only videeos I like...and why even bother to have a computer if it won't do things I want it to do and it's made to do? Are computers that worthless? Maybe so. lol.

Now that I've said what I want to do, I don't see anyone helping me. I only see people blasting me. No help whatsoever.

Now that you all know I want to burn DVDs with SELECT videos (unlike something I might buy) to use in a location where I only have access to a portable DVD player.............does that fix the problem I had? No? Didn't think so.

Sadly, tech knowledgeable people want to bloviate and spew their boring tech terms and don't know how to just answer questions. I once worked in a field where I actually helped people with computer tech problems. I got paid on commission. I helped, really helped people with their problems and didn't confuse them or change the subject. I earned just under a hundred grand a year...helping people with tech problems. I far out-earned those who might have been more tech savvy than I because I didn't belittle people and didn't try to impress them. Every single tech oriented person I've known over the years could take lessons.
