Hello,
After having a Kodak Easyshare printer and an HP Envy 4501 printer that are both bricks that won't get around error messages, I'm looking for the following:

1) A printer/scanner
2) Under $100
3) Can print black and white, even if color cartridge is out or low (It's amazing how many new printers now require that all cartridges be working to print black and white)
4) Doesn't have a meltdown if you use off brand ink cartridges
5) Ink cartridges aren't $50 or overly expensive

Does such a printer exist? While looking for a printer that isn't made by the usual suspects (Kodak, HP, Canon), I saw pretty good reviews for the Brother MFC-J470DW printer on Amazon since ink cartridges are around $15 and you can buy off brand cartridges, but even that printer requires a color cartridge to print black and white. Printers have gotten so complicated. Has anyone had great luck with a certain model?

I just got a J470DW myself, to replace the piece of crap Epson that sat in the corner and cried for ink carts all the time. I did an even exchange of my LD products ink carts that I had just bought for the Epson and got twice the number of carts for the same money. (A definite plus for LD, making me a happy customer) So far the Brother seems to do a decent job, but these are early days. At least it isn't constantly blowing its noses like the Epson.

Usually the Brother printers fall in line with what you are looking for. In my view it's easier just to have two wifi printers. A AIO do it all and a basic monochrome printer with minimal functions just to print B/W.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will go with the Brother printer. Brother is an old, reliable brand, and the ink cartridges are cheap.

I agree about Brother printers. I had an HP that was junk, although it was expensive. I finally gave up on it and bought an inexpensive Brother from Amazon. It's been working great for the past 4-5 years
