A while back, I mentioned that my internal CD/DVD RW drive gave up
( I thought ... , because it did not work any more, trying to make it eject does not work, but the pin in pinhole method is OK),
and I was told that things like this happen !.
OK, I accept that, and I purchased an external CD/DVD RW drive which works as expected.
Then I just happen to click something and see this (attached pic)
I normally never look at the *Whole Computer*
Questions:
Why are there (3) Three CD/DVD Drives ?
There should be only two !
The Device Manager only shows (2) two !
The one labeled as : DVD RW Drive (H), is my new external CD/DVD RW Drive.
I *think* that the one labeled : DVD RW Drive (F) is/was the original drive when everything was still OK.
IF so, then what is the drive, labeled as : CD Drive (K) ?
Why is one labeled as a DVD drive and the other one as a CD drive ?
On the icon for drive (F) what are those two question marks ?
(They *look* like Question marks)
Clicking on either the (F) or (K) icon does nothing, except for a message that asks me to isert a disk,
Which I can not do since not does NOT want to eject ...
Yet the *Device status* of the drives says that they are functioning ?!
Laptop HP G60 series
OS: Win7 Ult
Any more info required, tell me what kind !
I Appreciate your help !

Can you disable one of them?
Reinstall/update driver?
When's the last time you did a virus/malware scan?

I can not disable any of the ones that seem to be the internal one(s),
But I can disable the external one by disconnecting it.
After, I still see the two *internal ones ...
Reinstall/update driver?
No idea which driver has to be *re-installed*, or updated.
When's the last time you did a virus/malware scan?
Virus/malware scans are done on schedule,
like each day a minor one and once a week a thorough one.

I wonder if the third *phantom* icon, is some *virtual* drive icon, but I do not know which programme on my disk installed it (like *nero* or something ?)
If it was *broken* (the internal drive), why does it say they are functioning ?
This is what puzzles me.
I may have to do a complete re-install ?
Something I am not looking forward to !
Looking at the pic with the drives listed, does anybody know what those two *question marks* are on the icon ?
I spent 90 minutes on the phone trying to talk to an HP service tech.
No one after that long, so I gave up.

They are not question marks. They are little people. I think it's the icon that appears on shared folders. How it's showing up on on a duplicate drive I don't know. Do you have that DVD/RW drive shared? Turn off sharing on the drive and see if it goes away.

Not sure why you would get two drive icons, as for why they still show up;
At the device level, the drive is still functioning and plugged in. It has a mechanical problem (won't eject), but the BIOS and Windows can't see that, they just know that the device responds during the POST. The BIOS still sees the drive as an active device, so Windows shows it as as active device.
IMO, reinstalling Windows won't fix this, since the drive is still plugged into the motherboard. You might be able to disable the device in the BIOS, or open the case and unplug it.

Found a way to *disable* the internal drive. Software in some dialogue ...
Then the *phantom* drive is still there !?
Thanks all who responded.
Maybe some day, I will disassemble the laptop, and remove the drive.
Which still does not solve why there is an additional *icon* there !
Next thing I will try is removing *NERO* .
I will let you guys know.

Well, I'll be !!
I can see *little people* now !
I looked at the properties of that Icon, and then it stated that is *WAS* shared !!
Turned it off, and now the little people are gone !
Thanks.
Whoa, I can still edit this post !
I did some more checking the properties of the Icon.
The *phantom* drive is NOT shared.
But ...
It says that it can be mounted, by *ULTRA ISO*
I removed that programme, and wolah ... *phantom* drive Icon is gone !!!
Clicking on the real internal drive Icon still does not do anything.
My opinion ... It is kaput !!
Thanks to everybody !
Problem solved !!
