Is there a way to set Thunderbird not to download and update without asking? I have this set at MS but Tbird apparently plays by its own drummer.

Tools > options, click on the 'advanced' button at the top, then click on the update tab. There is an option in the middle that says "when are updates are found" You can choose to have updates automatically installed or have Thunderbird ask you what you want to do.

Thank you. I found it and set it. I really do need a basic course in computerese. Not the complicated interworkings that many of you enjoy. Not the jargon of technical terms and acronyms. Just where the simple things are that one might want to do. I am always so afraid to touch anything lest I "break" it. Since someone else has to come in and fix it, that gets expensive.

For the most part that's not possible, different applications have settings in different areas. You're not going to hurt anything by looking around the menus, and if you want to change something, just document it so you can find it again in case you want to change it back.
