So at first the printer installed (I assume from the CD that came with it) printed, but wouldn't scan. Then you downloaded software from the Internet and installed again. Did you uninstall the original install first? Now you can't print at all and the computer doesn't see the printer at all. The first printer died, it last about 4 1/2 years, and served me well. I do a lot of printing and scanning, so the deskjets get a lot of use from me.
These observations were not intended to be about the old printer, but about the new one. Or were you back talking about the old one in the middle of posting about the new one? This is becoming very confusing.

Call the printers customer service phone. I had to do that once and they were really helpful talking me through things. Took a couple hours but well worth it now that it has lasted this long.

I still think there might be separate scanner software to be installed to make it compatible with your operating system.

Or are you using the scanner through another software like Photoshop or using it as a standalone?

The old printer is in the trash.

The new printer prints, but Windows Fax/Scan says there is no scanner detected. I ordered a new USB cable from eBay, and should have it by the middle of next week at the earliest.

I would if I could, but I just moved from San Diego to Tijuana. I'm waiting on my Magic Jack Plus to arrive, and my Smartphone would cost $4.99 per minute. I have a prepaid phone that I use at home.

I still think there might be separate scanner software to be installed to make it compatible with your operating system. The scanner is installed, it's just not being detected.

If you use Windows Fax/Scan instead of the Canon software, you can't click "Change"? How about you clicking on the Canon software itself?

With my old computer and XP, I could scan directly with the printer/scanner. When I bought the new computer with Windows 7, the only way to scan was with Windows Fax/Scan. I tried with the Canon software, all it does is take you to a settings page, and any scanning still has to be done with Windows Fax/Scan.

It's a Canon Pixma MG 2520.
