I am by no means a computer genius...just a couple of steps away from basic user.
About 2 weeks ago, I started having problems accessing several websites, including City-Data from my home computer...get the "error, server may be down or busy" message. Last night this also occurred when I tried to access my Bellsouth and Yahoo email boxes.
Can anyone offer fixes/suggestions? Bellsouth DSL help was no help.
I know my computer is old...trying to wait til Christmas to get a new, faster one, but this is getting frustrating.
old computer isn't too big of a deal if you're just surfing. however, old and unkept (unnecessary programs and files etc..) would be. In essence that error is telling you that your browser isn't receiving a response from the site. The reason behind that can be numerous. Communications issues on the line (DSL), network/hardware issues on your computer, or the site really is not responding.
Its hard to troubleshoot this without looking at your computer. But if it just happened.. I'd try and see what changed right before these issues started.

When that happens, try pulling up a site like Google or MSN.com or go back to Yahoo! (NOT your mailbox) and see if they work. IF they do, there is a problem with the sites and not much you can do.
IF you can't get those, then it just may be the line or your computer. Try rebooting your computer and/or your modem. Liz
tried again last night and couldn't access the 3 sites, but could get into my email boxes, and other sites. It's almost like a block has been put on my computer for those 3 sites...no one else uses my computer but me so I'm really confused. I've decided to break down and brave the crowds Friday am and go ahead and buy a new computer this weekend. thanks for the suggestions!
Open ie and go to Tools/Internet Options/Security Tab and click each of the four icons. Click Default if it isn't black text. When you click on the Restricted icon notice the Sites button. Click on it to see the list of restricted sites. If the ones you can't get to are in the list remove them. Click OK until you are out of the dialog box. Exit and restart ie. Try your sites.

Do you have a firewall program?
Do you use anti-virus and anti-spyware programs?
I don't have a firewall but do have Norton and run SpyBot and Adaware at least once a week.

Or download Mozilla from Firefox for your browsing, I know of certain websites that run much faster using this browser.
