I bought a brand new Motorola SB6121 cable modem, along with a new Netgear N750 Router. For some reason, the connection between the router and the modem would go dead periodically. The lights on the modem and router that indicate a connection via. the Ethernet cable would go out. The problem was easily resolved by unplugging the Ethernet cable, waiting a few seconds, and plugging it back in. I sometimes had to do this a few times, but it worked eventually. I have tried different Ethernet cables, but this does not resolve the problem. Though the problem can easily be corrected, it's a pain in the rear to deal with it, especially if I am not at home and need to access my home network remotely.

I thought the problem was with the Router, so I returned the N750 and replaced it with a new Belkin AC1750. The problem still persists, though the problem does not seem to occur as frequently with the Belkin.

I think I have isolated the problem to the Modem, so my next step is to replace the modem, Does anyone have a better idea, before I take this step? I would like to avoid the hassle of returning the device and registering another modem with Comcast, if at all possible.

Thanks!

Bypass the router and connect a computer directly to the cable modem for a while and see if the issue remains, if it does your conclusion is correct.

The same thing was happening at my house, turned out to be something wrong with the connection outside the house. Have you called Comcast to see if they can tell if there is a problem with the signal?

That's another possibility. OP, did you have this issue before you replaced the modem?

I do not recall having this problem before I replaced the modem. The "internet" light on the modem stays lit when the LAN light goes out.It seems that the modem is connected to the internet, but is not communicating with the router.

Is it a complete disconnect or simply connection time-outs due to noise?

I am pretty sure it is a complete disconnect. The Ethernet connect lights on the router and modem do not illuminate, and the connection cannot be restored unless I unplug one end of the cord and plug it back in.

i.e. have you tried pinging a site when this happens? For example: ping -t google.com
and see whether the connection in timing out or the host is unreachable?

I had this intermittent problem before and it turned out to be noise and the Comcast guy had to adjust their signals.

I have not tried pinging. I will give that a shot when it happens again.
