Most carriers have an email-to-SMS gateway. You just need to know how to address the message. For instance, Verizon uses the vtext.com domain, so emails would go to 2135551212@vtext.com to send a text to a cell with the number (213) 555-1212.
Thanks for the suggestions. I am pretty technically illiterate, so I wasn't aware you could send an email to a cell phone. I know my husband can open emails on his blackberry, but not sure what kind of the phone the recipient I want to text to from the PC has so not sure if that can be done. But again, thanks.
You can set up a Google Voice account which would then give you a phone number to text from your computer with, if that is what you wish to do and replies would also go to your computer or anywhere you access your account.

Cellphone text messages are different than Internet e-mails. When using something like Verizon's 2125551212@vtext.com service, they are converting your Email (SMTP) message to a Cellphone (SMS) text message. So your recipient does *not* need an Email reader on their cell/smartphone. You do need to know who their carrier is to use their gateway.
I use Verizon's vtext. com service to send text messages from my PC to family's Verizon phones. And they can reply with text messages that arrive in my PC's Email in-box.
Both Yahoo and AOL email have a function whereby messages can be sent as text as long as you have the phone number.
