Can someone please tell me exactly what I should find in "Categories" in Gmail? I am certainly finding thing that I didn't put there. Maybe there is a reason. I know Gmail does things differently. I'd just like to know if what I am finding is normal. Thank you.
Interesting. Mine has Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums. And I just noticed something else. The emails in "Updates" are duplicates of those in Inbox. I don't understand Gmail and, of all the Dummies books - thousands of them - there is not one that teaches about Gmail.
Evidently it is different for different computers. My Manage Labels and Create New Labels are separate folders.
How do you turn it off? And what is the benefit of doing so? It might solve another problem I have which I think is in my settings. If I delete a letter that has other letters in some way connected to it all the letters will be deleted. Example: If I have copies of an email in three different personal folders and delete it from one of those, they will all get deleted.
Ah well, that's another story. I have tried the support site. I'll try it again. Maybe I'm just not reading well.
What device are you using? On a computer just go to settings > inbox, and deselect the categories. On Android go to settings from the hamburger menu > select the mail account > Inbox categories > deselect the unwanted categories.
You actually have only one copy of an email, but it can be in multiple categories. I can figure out what emails are what on my own, categories just confuse me.

Thank you. I will close categories. As for the one copy, you are right but friends tell me that doesn't happen on their computers. That's why we think it is some setting that I have on. I once had three personal folders full a duplicates of conversations. I had to eliminate one of those folders. When I did so, I lost everything in all three folders. I've never tried personal folders since but I have accidentally lost emails by one kind of crossing or another.
I'll set aside some time to do some more digging into gmail. I had pretty much given up trying to do any more than just exchange emails.
I have Categories turned off. It's really only useful if you're one of those people that receives tons of emails every day from stores, user groups, and things like that. Otherwise I just find it to be an annoyance and turned it off.

I tried turning it off. There is a line that says to turn it off but I got no response out of it. Nothing to click that worked. I think I figured out one thing. I've always wondered why most of my mails have a yellow folder beside them. These are probably the ones Google "sorts". There is a place beside each category to choose a color. That would aid the sorting, I suppose.
Thanks for confirming what I thought about its usage. It's of no use unless you think you need to sort and classify mail. I don't get that much. What I get, I read, answer if that is called for and delete.
Thanks, all. Learning that it is no more important that that, I'll just ignore it.
