under device manager I see it listed, but when I open say explorer, I see the H driver with a question mark.

I'm not sure what to do, as I'm trying to run CDs installation and even command prompt says its not there when I type H:

While you were in device manager, did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the optical drive?

Is this a new drive, new computer, OS upgrade or what. IOW, what preceded the problem?

You probably know that new USB CD drives are dirt cheap. Even a USB DVD burner is cheap.

Is this an internal optical drive?
If so, you reinstalled the IDE ATA/ATAPI driver, right?
Can you post a screenshot of device manager showing the correct device was recognized?

new PC, but upgraded to win 10 from windows 7. I just noticed it because I was going to install AoE 3 but the cd never ran or even the .exe file boot up.

I'm probably going to buy a blu ray anyway. this cd player dates back to early 2000s

ok for whatever reason it now works after I right clicked on the start menu and went into disk management. literally that's all I did. installed AoE 3 and played a bit of it.

If it disappears again, don't get too worried about it.
My CD drive (Win 10) repeatedly does. I researched but never did find a permanent fix.
After it failing to run, it does if I restart. Pita but it works.
It's almost like I had to remind it that it's supposed to be there
