We use an HP Laserjet 1200 I picked up in, I think, 2009 from a client that had run labels through it and they stuck to the drum. They didn't want to spend any money to fix it. Instead they told me to throw it away and they bought a new one.

I cleaned off the labels and have been using it ever since. Finally had to replace the toner cart last year.

Our color laser is a Brother. Shelf model from Staples we ran into while looking for other stuff. 1/2 price. It had 15 pages printed when we bought it.

We buy carts through eBay. I don't remember what the HP cost, but a full set of Brother have been ass low as $70.

What everyone in this thread is missing:

Do not do a Firmware Update to any HP printer dated around 9/2016 as it will lock out non-HP cartridges from being used.

^ Interesting article. Right now, they're only doing this to enterprise customers. Wonder how long that will last? Enterprise customers often lease, so I see many dumping their HP in a year or two. After all, a good business case can be made about cheaper total cost for printers.

I know things have changed, but when I had an HP years ago you could take out a "quarter battery", leave it out for a while, replace it and an "empty" cart would magically print again. I'm sure they've fixed that problem by now.

Nope it's already in the retail lines. People are already complaining about the 8600 series is not working with generics.

I have never heard of a home consumer updating a printer's firmware. How many people would even know how to do that, unless you're talking about a wireless printer that downloads automatically.

Read the links. It was sent out as a software update without telling consumers that the firmware got updated.

^ This is why I remove update software from my startup and anywhere else I find that it will run automatically.

Home users will however install all the HP bloat from the installation CD, which contains software to automatically download the latest software and firmware. Wireless printer not required.
