The letter after 802.11 indicates the level of the Wifi technology. In general, newer Wifi technologies are backward compatible with older ones but not vice versa.
Here are the most common Wifi technologies since the turn of the century, listed from newest to oldest:
AC
N
G
B
The vast majority of devices out there are compatible up to N. Some very new ones might even support AC.
I'm not sure what's the max speed for AC but N goes up to about 300 Mbps, G goes up to 54 Mbps, and B only about 10-11 Mbps. For most everyday Internet use including watching Youtube videos but nothing intense like streaming very high definition videos, G is good enough, assuming your ISP's speed is at least 50 Mbps.
