Like a wireless router that i could buy online and could be used with a charger of some sort. Or do I always need an Ethernet cord with home wifi?

An ethernet cable is only needed to do the initial setup. Cause how else are you going to connect securely to configure it? Once this is done you can run it strictly on wireless.

You need a connection between your router and the internet. Most require a wire to your internet modem. You can have a hot spot that you can connect too but the hot spot still needs a link to the internet although it might be a through a wireless phone connection.

not sure if this is what teh op is questioning but if my internet tranceiver is bruk up (essentially cutting the internet connection to the wifi router), i can still stream stuff from my desktop upstairs to my kodi-htpc connected to my living room tv. so technically, cat-5 is not necessary for wifi.

A wifi repeater/extender works as a router with no ethernet connection.

Sounds like he's looking for something similar to a Hot Spot.
Something likes this that works on Cellular OP?
