How hard is it too replace a keyboard in a Toshiba Satellite Laptop which is five years old I think? I bought this new. Has 17 inch monitor and it's a AMD A4 and running windows 10. My key R and caps lock key stopped working.

Thanks for the help.

not hard. just depends on model.

I had to disasemble my HP 15 laptop to replace the HD and it involved disconnecting the keyboard cables. Some are very tricky. Try to find a you tube video to watch before you start, cause you can damage the connectors very easily.

Try blowing some compressed air around the keys to see if something is stuck under the key.
You can buy cans of air.

You might be able to remove the two bad keys and clean out and anything that is stopping them from working. Maybe YouTube can help with this.

Google it. There will be a youtube video unless you have some really obscure laptop. Some laptops you'll have to take the back plate off, pry off the palm wrest and side bezels, take out a couple screws holding the keyboard tray, lift it up, unplug the ribbon cable, then just reverse and done. Others have a plastic shroud you can pry off on top without taking the bottom panel off. Others just shoot yourself now, but that's mostly Mac products. Most you can do in 5-10 minutes.

Before you replace the keyboard I would try to clean out your keys. I know enough about computers to be dangerous. But it just so happens I just fixed my "R" key with the help of Mr YouTube. That "R" key must be popular. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Are your keys stuck down and wont pop back up. I popped my key off and cleaned out the popcorn. Then I put the bits back and popped the key back on. Good as new.

Before popping off the keys make sure you can. I tried it and simply can't get them back on.
I wasn't brave enough to try replacing the keyboard.
For $25 I bought a USB keyboard. For my other one, I use the online keyboard and keep it small and at the bottom of the screen .

I just had my keyboard replaced on my HP laptop.

I bought a new keyboard on line (cost about $10). I was going to do it myself, but got cold feet!

Luckily, I found a college student who replaced the keyboard for me for $30. It took him about 45 minutes, and did the work right at my kitchen table.

There are many you tube videos showing how to replace the keyboards of various makes and models.

It is fairly easy. For my particular laptop, the back had to be taken off and the CD device removed.

If you do it yourself, just a hint: the new keyboard may have a covering that has to be taken off before it'll fit. It's a little hard to notice.

Good luck! I suffered for about a year using a virtual keyboard before getting mine fixed. aaarrrgghhh!

ps: don't take it to the Geek Squad. I've heard horror stories!

Thinking it was a rather simple job, except for myself, I took mine to Staples to just do the keys. They wouldn't touch it.
