I'm planning on replacing my 6 year old laptop this year. I'm considering OLED display, but was wondering if it's worth it for laptop and how much does it effect battery life?
My main use for a laptop is when I'm on the road, so battery life is important. My main use would be for photography and editing photos when I travel. Primarily Lightroom with some light photoshop use. Any other use would be web browsing, movies and low end video games when I travel.
ALL LED's are pretty low power. Battery life wold not enter my mind when deciding on the screen.
Not always...OLED's use less power than a LCD, but the higher the resolution, the more power they use.
I've used a couple 4K laptops and they tend to eat the battery vs. a 1080p or 1440p one. I wouldn't buy another 4K laptop again. 1440p seems to be the sweet spot on that one.
This is a great question. As you imply, one of the benefits of OLED displays is their lower power usage compared to other displays. Not only will this contribute to your battery lasting longer, but OLED only uses as much power as needed to light a specific pixel. So using dark mode on your laptop will yield longer battery life. This is why most cell phones use OLED screens.
That being said, while OLED displays use less power, the difference may be hardly noticeable depending on your usage due to how other components in the laptop draw power.

Pretty much always. But, there's this:

So yea, you're not going to get much more time no matter what the display is...
