Which one would you recommend based on quality? In other words, which one usually has more problems w/ hardware, display etc. Thanks!!

I believe Sony generally does better than HP on quality surveys. I have a Sony and it was made in Japan but I don't know if all of them are. HP's come from China. Both brands have terrible pre-loaded software. If you want either of them to run properly, immediately reformat and load a clean copy of Windows.

From this PCMAG article,

Quote:
No surprise, both were down, Dell to a 6.8 and HP to a 5.9. Both vendors were at the high end when it came to percentage of new notebooks that required a tech support call (35 and 36 percent, respectively). Only Sony was worse, at 37 percent.
The article is from 2007 but the recommended laptops, based on user surveys, were Apple and Lenovo/IBM.

I wish I could get an Apple laptop (I use their desktop) but the software I'd be using the laptop for doesn't run on a Mac (properly at least).

Thanks for the comments - keep them coming!!

Sony has been tops for the amount of bloatware on new PC's for a while, HP is second.

You also might go to all the PC Magazine web sites - Maximum PC, Smart Computing, as well as google for laptop magazines

I have a Compaq laptop that's never given me problems and still runs well. It's ancient, bought it in 2003.

I know someone with a Lenvo that likes it.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the best hardware that you can for what you want to spend. You also might see if any new processors are coming out, that will mean prices will go down on what was recently the best.
