My computer at home is very sick and I don't know what to do...I can't even get it into safe mode...how screwed am I? Pushing "r" brings it right back to this screen. F10 gets me to the safe mode option screen..when I click on it..it brings me back to this screen..
If you have the original Windows installation CD/DVD, try booting to this (turn on the computer with the Windows disk in your DVDROM, and press a key to boot to it when the prompt appears on screen). After a few minutes, another prompt should come up, giving you some options - one should be to press "R" to repair your disk. Give that a try.
In the middle of a long discussion on another forum I found these:
1. One thing you can try is take out 1 stick of memory and see if it boots into windows - if not put that stick back in and take the other one out - and so on. See if one of your memory sticks is bad.
I heard of someone with this same problem and it was because he had bad memory - once he replace the bad memory it worked fine.
2. just want to add my two cents in since i get a lot of help from this site. I have a toshiba satelite p15 s470 and it was having the same problem and i couldn't figure out what to do. I took the advise of one of the contributers and removed one of the memory modules and it worked. It seemed to be an issue with mis matched memory. One memory module was dell 512mb and the other was Toshiba 215. I removed the dell memory and it's been working so far.
Another mention of it being linked to a RAM issue and n included link in (I think) the second post explaining how to so it. Note also some additional links to similar questions at the top of the page.
Before you try any repairs, I've seen this be a result of a currupt file system. Boot from your XP CD, foll0w the directions to boot to the recovery console (don't remember step by step, let me know if you need help. Once at the command prompt type; chkdsk /r
Let it run as long as it takes to finish, DO NOT under any circumstances reboot or turn the computer off until it finishes, then type exit and let it restart and post back with the results.

Dave, reread post #3. It won't go to the recovery console screen, it loops back to the error.

Whoops, missed that. In that case, if the machine is booted from the CD, and selecting the recovery console causes it to restart, there are more serious problems I think.
To the OP, are you performing these steps?
Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
What I usually do is slave the drive on another computer and run checkdisk/repair when everything else fails. Hopefully the OP has that option.
