Your going to send more time trying to resolve this issue than it necessary. Since this HDD has already been wiped once, then there is nothing to save on it. Just low-level it to 100% clear it of any by products left the previous install, place the CD in and let it do its magic ( it will format it and reload the OS). Then you may want to scan the unit to find what which H/W components are not compatible with SP2 and disable them. After that load SP2. fin.

Low level it? Not even possible by the end user on today's drives, a quick format will do the job just fine.

problem is fixed. She ended up reinstalling.

If its coming with XP SP1 its at least 5-7 years old. It is came with 2000 its even older. Either way with a bootable CD any older hard drive can be low level formatted. But if thats too difficult than do a DOD3 to it. But for newer HDDs then one would use a zero-fill and diagnostic utility.
