We purchased a Dell Inspiron 530 a couple of months ago, well the other day while listening to music the sound went to a higher pitch, suddenly everyone sounds like Michael Jackson and the chipmunks.

I ruled out the headphones being the problem, it does the same thing through the speakers.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

First thing to do is download and reinstall the audio drivers from Dell's website. Does every sound do it or just audio using a particular media player?

Yup drivers would be my first guess, followed by the media player maybe needing to be reinstalled.
