My friend owns a liquor store and he has asked me to come over and help him trouble shoot his computers.

Most of it was pretty easy basic Windows troubleshooting.

Then he tells me that when he had his surveillance system first installed you could see the totals rang up on the register by watching the camera monitor.

What happened was he moved his cash register and disconnected it from the surveillance system in the process.

First I tried just hooking it back together to see if it would work. No such luck.

I called the register dealer and they will give support for his register. Except they will not help you with the "text inserter" function. So I called up the company that made the surveillance DVR system. They tell me all you have to do it program the register and hook it up.

I found this PDF online:
http://www.vrxinc.com/documents/Setup_SAM_ER_5215M.pdf

The only thing is his register and DVR system do not require the adapter box. The register hooks into the DVR through a serial cable.

I programed the register just like it says in that PDF plus I tried several other options.

Oh Yeah! The manual doesn't say anything at all about it.

The cash register is a : SAM4s 5215m
The surveillance system is a : Eyemax dvs 9000 (it is a windows based pc with preinstalled hardware and software)

I would really like to help my friend get this working for him. If anyone out there knows how to do this please help.

Thanks

erk

See the box shown partway down the PDF file? The one that is called a VTI. That is the Text Inserter. You need to ask your friend what happened to it when the register was moved.

You can program the PC until your fingers fall off, but without that box you're wasting time.

"Typical Cable Connections.
Use a straight through cable with the appropriate gender for connection from the cash register serial port to the Serial Input on the Text Inserter. Typical this is a male-to-male cable or a male to female cable with a male-to-male gender adapter. To complete the flow control hand shaking required for when the cash register is set up for Journal Printer applications use the VRX SAM4s Handshake adapter. Connect it at the Serial Output of the Text Inserter. See the diagram below."

This box takes the data from the sale and directs it to the monitor. Without it there is no way to get the data there unless there is some software in the PC that does it, which is not indicated in the document you posted.

BTW I suspect that the person writing that document you linked to is either ESL or not very literate. Be careful to look for errors when you read it.

If the serial cable actually inputs into the DVR, it is likely that the insert function is within the DVR. More like this: POS Text Inserter DVR Cash Register Recording

This is getting too close to one of my areas of expertise where I actually get paid, and I don't give everything away for free, so all I'll say is that most "helpers" haven't a clue about the idiosyncrasies of serial port interfaces and POS systems when Windows is operating as a middleman. Even professional system builders and network gurus can mess it up. Support needs to come from eyemax, since it is their hardware. One clue, serial port setup and config..

Thanks for the replies guys. You definitely don't need the box like in the PDF. That serial port can be configured to run a scale, a display or another printer.

To get it to work properly you have to set up the cash register transmit the correct data. I just can't figure out what data to transfer.

Maybe you are right, another call to eyemax is warranted.

Thanks, Harry. I relied too much on the document and not enough on what the OP said.
