I have a Dell compact desktop w/o a floppy drive to back it up with (it's win2000) and I have a Compaq EVO D300v tower with floppy drive. I want to connect the HD from the Dell to the Compaq and be able to use it so I can make the backup discs.
I tried replacing the compaq HD with the Dell HD w/o success.

For ythose who do not know the Dell compact desktop takes laptop CD and Floppy drives. It's early (I don't sleep much) and I was hoping someone wanted to do this for mental exercise. When the recycle store opens I'll probably go and ask them for a floppy as I thought this machine had it when I bought it.

It depends on the type of HD. Is it an IDE or SATA drive? (Wide ribbon or a narrower kind of flattened cable with a small connection at the end).

You CAN swap drives in computers VERY easily, just know that getting the OS to work may be something entirely different (you are putting an instruction set for another machine in, it will not have the driver set or a bunch of other thnigs needed to work on the other machine).

SO one thing that would help would be to look at the two hard drives and see if you can find some sort of description on it (160GB SATA, etc etc).

GL!

You cannot move an NT based OS from one PC to another and expect it to boot, on a rare occasion it will but more often than not it won't, you will get the inaccessable boot device BSOD, this is due to the difference in motherboard chipsets, specifically the hard drive controller.

Why don't you just go out and purchase an external enclosure? You can get them on ebay for less than $15.

I'm good it turns out not to be necessary. I have the thing running and I am waiting for HP to send me a recovery disc. I think it will be fine.
I only need to find the solution for this Win2K display bug. I can only get 640X480 and 16 colors, it has a step up to the next level but it just reverts when I try. There is no monitor in Device manager and nothing I install as far as drivers goes from the HP site or the Monitor Manufacturer seems to help. I'm hoping to load the recovery disc and solve this. BTW I never knew one could get a recovery disc from the computer manufacturer as long as you have the serial number and $10 in this case.
I was able to see online that this was a common problem for Win2K but I haven't as yet found any posts by people that solved it.

Thanks for the help everyone

Depending on the computer specs, it might be worth going to Newegg & buying an OEM copy of XP
