My laptop is pretty new and Vista is already having probems. I keep getting this message when I turn it on. I've tried booting from the startup dvd and doing a repair, but it's not working. It's under warranty, so I could call Dell, but I don't want to be on the phone for 2 hours only to have them tell me to reinstall. Does anyone have advice, short of reloading Vista and losing all my files?

It's a linux distribution that's completely self-contained on a CD. You boot from the CD and it loads drivers and gives you a graphical desktop, all without ever messing with your hard drive. It's a pretty common tool to use in situations like yours, as it gives you a fully functioning system with a graphical interface without having to install an operating system.

Probably better to use a newer LiveCD distro, anyway, or at least a new version of Knoppix. I read and write to NTFS partitions all the time from Ubuntu and Puppy Linux, for example.
