So I need a new power adapter cord for my 4 year old Dell Inspiron 6000. They are $50 buying direct from dell but on ebay there are some supposedly actual dell power adapters and some generic ones. I noticed on one site selling the actual dell adapters that it said that buying a generic power adapter could possible blow the computer.
Has anyone bought one off of ebay or a noname accesorry like that? I also need a new battery for it. I don't want to spend much because this computer won't really last too much longer anyway!
What model Dell? Some Dell's have a Data pin (the center pin) on their power supplies that communicate with the laptop, if the laptop detects it's not the proper power supply it won't allow charging of the battery and will give an error stating such every time you turn it on.
Mine is the Inspiron 6000. The power adapters I am looking at say specifically that they are for use with the Inspiron 6000. My brother says not to use a generic one and while not a professional he is our families computer guru.

As long as they guarantee compatibility you should be fine
You may also look for a Dell power adapter on ebay. I can find nearly any part I need for the Dell laptop I have, but you model may be a different story. Simply be specific enough in your search criteria to find exactly what you want.
I know all that and I have done a ton of searches. Real dell power adaptors run about $30 on ebay but the generic ones run about $10 including shipping. I have found real dell parts at a better price than direct through dell and generic ones. I need to know if a generic power adaptor or battery will fry my computer as some people have said.
