When I first bought an Apple computer, I had OSX El Capitan. About a year ago, I updatedd to Catalina. All was going well. Now, suddenly, every time I close an app and get back to Desk Top, a square appears identified with "OS X El Capitan and then lists all the data: processor, memory, etc. To the left there is a huge X and it is not to close the window.
Can anyone say what is going on? Have I suddenly reverted to El Capitan? Thank you.
How are you closing apps? I use Command-Q. What do you do?
Your description sounds like the "About this Mac" window. Try it. Go to the Apple on the top left and click "about this Mac" It should tell you which version you have. Mine says, "macOS Big Sur 11.1" for example.

You might get more responses from people who know how to help, if you edit the thread title to clarify that you're asking What Operating System now come in a Mac, as there are so many types of "computers".

Thankyou. I did that and it confirmed El Capitan. A call to Apple Care where a few hours of following instructions got me back into Catalina. Still have a few issues to fix now but may be on my way. Sorry to be late with this but, for some reason, I could now get in yesterday. Maybe the patient is recovering?

It’s good that they helped you, but I can’t think of how it could be El Capitan if you already upgraded to Catalina. There’s no easy way to go backwards. Whatever it was it looks like they got it working for you.

I did ask him that question. It seems that in the original upgrade, Apple Care person had gotten me as far as ready to be installed but never installed it. And, once I went through the installation procedure this time, I was certain that was it. What I still do not understand is why it kept on working on that El Capitan. Previously, it was constantly locking up and saying I needed to upgrade but afterward, despite never installing, it was working fine.
As with mysteries of computers, yesterday I could not get in. It was telling me I had all kinds of issues that I could not deal with. So, I postponed it until someone could get here and fix it. However, after a 24 hour rest, I opened it up again and, so far, all is back to normal. Maybe it just needed a recuperation period? :-)
Thank you for your help. hazel
