I seem to recall in other versions of Windows if I set a file folder a certain way, eg with only file name and size, it stayed that way. Vista keeps changing it, and worse, sometimes it would seem randomly ie switching it to "medium icon" view (which I NEVER use). Can't you set a given folder to its own settings and it should stay that way?

You have to define a folder type. Then, change that folder type to the settings you want.

When you right click on a folder and go to Properties, then Customize, you'll see what I mean. Pick one of those folder types, Apply, then OK. Now, change it the way you want, then go to the main Folder Options (Where you save the folder view for All Folders), save it.

What you've just done is created a template. You need to now apply that template to all folders that you want to have the view. That usually means going to the top level folder (C drive, for example), applying it there, then going back to Folder Options and telling it to do All Folders again. That usually works.
