We are planning a move to CT in the next 6 months and I am hoping to get some advice in regards to what towns we should be looking at before I arrange for visits with real estate brokers. I have looked at previous threads and have found the information very helpful. Our particular situation is that :
-Husband works in NYC and will commute by train - hoping to keep time on the train to less that 1 hour as he will have to do some NY subway as well.
-Looking for really strong public schools (we have 2 small children, preK and pre-preK), our oldest requires physical and occupational therapy and may require extra help in the classroom as he gets older so looking at schools that integrate special services in the classroom
- a walkable center of town
- presence of other Europeans would be a plus (we are french-american)
- easy access to outdoor activities with kids (nature walks, beach, golf...)
- price range in low 7 figures.
So far I am looking at Ridgefield (though maybe the commute is too long), Greenwich (I read that the schools are not consistent), Darien (maybe not diverse enough?).
Thank you
Mina

All 3 are great communities...you can't wrong with any of them. Personally, I would go with Darien (for the beach).

I would go with Greenwich or Darien, for the sake of having a reasonable commute. Ridgefield is pushing it too far. And, don't worry about the whole diversity thing, being french. It really isn't going to matter in the NYC metro region. You'll be fine. Your price range is plenty as well. You could probably find something decent in Greenwich or Darien.

Also check New canaan. Not sure why you think the schools in Greenwich are not "consistant". They are considered excellent. Jay

Thank you all for your feedback, very helpful.
Renovating and Nep321: I am going to visit Greenwich tomorrow to get a feel for the different neighborhoods. I will look into Darien more closely and arrange for a separate visit there. It seems Ridgefield is too much of a stretch commute wise so that will be our last option.
JayCT: I did not know about New Canaan, I will take a look at it. Regarding the schools I was getting my info from what I can find on school web posts so it is likely not accurate.
Many Thanks!

You're looking at 3 of the best communities in the United States in 1. Greenwich, 2. Darien, and 3. New Canaan. You cannot go wrong in any!

Actually with middle schools it really is inconsistent. Western Middle pales in comparison to Eastern and Central.

Ive lived in Darien for 25 years. No problem being French at all.Best schools are Darien, New Canaan,Wilton,Westport. Ridgefiweld is too far if not really necessary.Sounds like you like the shore towns in which case Darien and Westport are good choices. You can go to my blog to learn about Darien.

Hallo Mina

So what city did you choose?

I am girl just relocated to Greenwich from Denmark, 10 days ago. We are a family with two kids - a girl at 7 years and a 20 month old boy. My husband commute to NY every day. I don't know any people in the area at all, so maybe we could meet, if you are interested?!

Best regards
Tina
