Fairfield County has a few good diners that are close to those in NJ but the further from the city you get, the harder they are to find. In the Hartford area, there are only a couple I would go to (Olympic, O'Rouke's). Too bad, Jay
The old building that was there was awesome. And the dining car right in front of it. Then again, I used to like the motel across the street too. My spouse and I took a room there once, before we were married or had our own place.
On topic: I haven't been to Sonic yet. I'll wait til the initial novelty wears down a little and probably give it a try in a month or so. I tried Five Guys a couple weeks ago for the first time. The burgers weren't as awesome as they were advertised to be but their fries were addictive. I'll probably go back there just for the fries.
As for burgers that are fast-serve (as opposed to fast-food), no one beats Louis Lunch. No one.
It is a real shame that they tore down the old Yankee Silversmith for Sonic. It was one of the better buildings on Route 5 in Wallingford. Even the motel across the street was nicer than BJ's. Wallingford does not have an architectural review committee or any regulations on architectural design which is evident in the quality of buildings you see along Route 5. They do have some strange land use regs though that were designed to keep development intensity (and therefore traffic) down but that really has not worked well. Jay
The Yankee Silversmith was torn down because it burned up. It wasn't all that well-maintained to begin with and by the time the fire was over most of the wood was waterlogged and the structure was no longer sound enough to repair.
It was a real shame, and it really was one of the more remarkable historic buildings in the area. But they didn't tear it down "for Sonic." They tore it down because it was ruined and irreparable.

They didn't. After all the new "development" went on across the street and around it...there was a "sudden fire". It's been an empty lot for over a year and "for sale".
