my husband and i would like to move to connecticut with our two boys. we are looking for a home with at least 3 acres a barn, workshop under 300,000 to have some goats chickens horse . My husband is a furniture builder of primitive and equestrian style furniture. what area of connecticut would be good to start looking, i saw some nice homes in mansfield, ashford, and brooklyn connecticut. Are they nice areas with a nice town to go into?
Yeah, those are nice towns. It might be a challenge to find 3 acres with a barn for under $300K, but it is possible. Ashford and Brooklyn are quite rural and don't have any significant town centers, but Mansfield is more populated and is a college town (UConn is there). It is possible to find a small farm property in nearly any town in CT, but you are wise to start your search in northeastern CT, where farm style homes are more common. If you have no luck there, try looking in Litchfield county, but it will be more expensive (northwestern CT).
Perhaps if you provided more specifics as to what you want in a property and/or town, I could help pinpoint some exact towns that might be better than what you listed.

I don't necessarily agree with you on this. Moving to Connecticut can provide you with a simmpler lifestyle yet keep you near major cities like New York and boston where you will find buyers for your husband's furniture. I think the area you selected is a good start. Eastern CT is affordable and offers much of what you are looking for. Good luck, Jay
There's a lot of open land, farming land out in eastern CT. Some of it is becoming more expensive due to the subdivision development. But well, I'd rather see open land and farms out this way than sprawl.

I think at their budget, finding land like that and a house with a barn and a town that has that in an area zoned to accept livestock is going to be very tough. NH/VT will give them MUCH more options.
Lots of small and huge farms in Lebanon. Many folks have mini farms here; 5 to 50 acres. You can get a tax break if you raise something to sell as well, IE- veggies, eggs, Llamas, etc. We're loaded with this kind of stuff out here.

*BUT* are those properties with a barn and acreage under 300K? If so, count me in!
Far northeastern or far northwestern CT are the only areas in CT without the "ratrace" mentality. If you can find a place in your price range, go for it. If not, VT or NH are your best bets.

Check these out- some of these homes are brand new on 5+ acres in a nice area of town I know well. There are many deals like this to be had out here; you certainly dont have to go to far Northeastern CT to escape the rat race mentality as kid suggested. This is whats great about this town.
