Are these towns coastal?

Racism is everywhere but here in CT
it's not such a major issue so I wouldn't worry about it.
Most people are very tolerant of all races & religion.

Ditto:
New London, Groton, Old Saybrook ($$$),
also Middletown or E.Hartford along the CT river.
Keep in mind CT is expensive... housing incl taxes, clothing
& food.
Good luck!

Check into E. Hartford, it may not be
coastal but it's next to the capital Hartford. You might
have better opportunities w/the Performing Arts Center.

Sev

If you so desire the coast- probably the New Haven area would suit your needs- with Yale, the performing arts center, the Yale art gallery and the British Museum of art- plus great restuarants. Towns nearby you may find desireable would East East and West Haven, Hamden, and Milford.

The other great area is New London/Groton -with the Eugene O'Neil theatre, Connecticut College, Mystic sealife Aquarium and seaport-

VLYS & Dragondog,

Thank you both for the information. At least I have a starting point for CT. I thought I was done with narrowing the cities/towns down, but I think New London, Groton, and old Saybrook are worth looking into.

We want to live some place SAFE and small, near the beach (preferably the ocean) with lots of snow and mild summers. We want to own our own performing arts theater someday in a nearby city from where we would be living and would love to be able to commute to that city where residents would support the arts.
We are an interracial couple (AA and Latino) moving to NE from the midwest where it can sometimes be very bigoted. Are there any towns in CT with the qualities I listed above and where racism is not such a big problem? Please let me know. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.
sevdie,

Just throw on a New York Yankees hat and you'll fit right in. There's a large influx of New Yorkers into the state (myself included).

Norwich has seen its better days- however it is making many positive changes and improvements. Its wonderful past is seen in its historic homes and grand Victorians. The town really declined in the 60s and 70's but is making a comeback. Utopia Studios will soon begin a huge complex of retail, recreation and a movie studio near town. The center of town is also being redeveloped. With around 38 thousand people- the town is a nice size. Crime is low- although some areas of town are rougher then others.

The town is attracting outside investment and new residents because of its New England charm, good schools, and low housing costs (median 250K)
The two Casino's are nearby (Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun) Plus the Connecticut shore and beaches, as well as the very scenic and historic 'quiet corner' of Connecticut. New London and Groton are about one half hour away.
Hartford via route 2 is about 40 minutes away.

Ample shopping in New London, Groton and Waterford. Norwich is nice because its shopping is less big box and more local businesses.

Many good places to eat in South eastern CT-much in the way of entertainment.

Employment today is mainly in health care, The Casinos, Defense, and services. The unemployment rate is low.

The people are a mixture of old Yankee (British stock) Irish, French, Italian and Polish. There is a growing Asian and Latino population

The towns website says;

Located in southeastern Connecticut, Norwich is a vibrant community with a beautiful harbor on the convergence of the Thames, Shetucket and Yantic Rivers. Norwich boasts outstanding cultural attractions including two museums and numerous festivals as well as an excellent education system which includes Norwich Public Schools and Norwich Free Academy.

The rivalry is alive and well. The latest poll from Quinnipiac University (dated 05/04/06) has Yankees fans at 42, Red Sox fans at 35, and Mets fans at 12. The Mets showing would probably be higher if the poll were conducted now.

The New York Times plotted the dividing line back in August. Suffice it to say, Fairfield, Litchfield, New Haven, and southern Hartford Counties are Yankees Country.
