Vince... I moved back to Connecticut after apartment living in Austin, Texas for 15 years. I am renting here in Connecticut, and you may be experiencing some of what I did. Most of the properties in Austin were managed by large real estate companies and REITs. They had over a hundred units and would be all over rent.com, apartments.com and offline rental magazines.

It's different in Connecticut than in much of the country. Much of the rental market is in rentals that are owned by individual landlords and own just a few properties. My current landlord owns 4 units in my condo complex. I actually prefer this type of arrangement because he is much more invested in the property, much more responsive and less bureaucratic than the big complexes I lived in in Austin.

In my opinion, the best resource for finding units would be craigslist.com. Daily there are multiple units listed in Black Rock alone!!

I just quickly glanced at the Conn. Post newspaper and there are over 15 apartments listed in Fairfield and Milford in your price range...not to mention other towns other than Bridgeport, as well. You shouldn't have any problem finding a decent rental.

Personally, I wouldn't rent in Bridgeport if safety is a concern.

HeHe. I didn't want to be the 1st person to direct the OP somewhere else, but my first thought when i saw the budget was that Fairfield, Stratford, Shelton, and Milford would be better choices.

Are you interested in a full apartment or a room rental? I know of a room rental in the North End in a nice place. If you're interested, PM me.

You're going to want to go to Fairfield County NOT New Haven. It's confusing because Fairfield county is considered a subreigon of NYC on Craigslist. I think you'll have much better luck there.

Black Rock is in Bridgeport, not a town in itself. Even if some of it's residents don't want to admit it. It is the nicest part of town.
