I did a search on Raveis.com for homes on 5+ acres in Fairfield County, and found 5 pages of homes in the OP's price range. Some are in Redding/Newtown/Monroe which might be commutable, especially if the OP leaves early enough in the morning. But the OP can't afford to be too fussy, and living "out in the country" might not be as rural as the OP is looking for. I did see some beautiful properties, though. It's definitely worth taking a look.

I just wonder if the OP has taken a look at what the property taxes would be on that kind of property in CT.

Ease him in gently, folks. We don't want to be responsible for any strokes or heart attacks.

strange that you are "NY Annie" and complaining about CT real estate taxes. I'm sure you know that in NY the taxes would be probably almost double what they are in CT.

there are 15 homes on 5+ acres under $750K in Newtown alone. Several of them under $500K. I can be done, but you will not get under an hour to Stamford in rush hour.

In CT, yeah, probably not. If you go over the line into Pound Ridge or Bedford or Lewisboro, there would probably be properties. Taxes however.........

Since (based on my property) CT property taxes are about 3X what they should be, that would make NY about 6X.

Seems about right.

Default What is possible

We don't typically have 5-10 acres parcels, except in exceptional situations. You can get a home that has some feeling of privacy on possibly 1-3 acres in the wooded areas of North Stamford. This will not be the largest home you have either seen at $750,000...but it will be a nice piece of privacy.

However, if you are working in Stamford, the good news is that there are very nice towns to commute from with nice homes at the price level. Again, that much acreage is not typical of the area, but you can get the feel of living in Vermont in some of the towns, it feels so absoultely quiet. Although the number of acres might not be there typically (if it is it would be wetlands or unusable for some other reason), the good news is you can find a home that feel like you are living on many acres.

Best, John Herman
