I don't know if you plan on visiting Hartford before you decide on this job (you should), but if you do you ought to stop by the Emergency Department at the hospital. Fairly frequently other nurses will post vacancies on a board in the back of the "blue pod." Usually there are rooms people are looking to rent or apartments they thought other nurses might be interested in. Just talk to the triage nurse in the walk-in area to the ED and I'm sure they'll be willing to help you out.

As far as apartments within walking distance to the hospital, I really wouldn't recommend it. Look at bus lines and go with the general principle that with few exceptions, south of the hospital is generally better than north of it. There are some really nice places in the downtown area of Hartford, but they are pretty expensive. You're going to want to get a car ASAP I would think...

If you're going to use public transport, you really need to check out those options before accepting a job *anywhere*. Even if you live in an area you feel comfortable, you may not feel comfortable getting to and from that area via public transport and some cities are known to have more problems than others.
