We recently paid a visit to Hartford county in search of a desirable area to relocate from NYC. We looked at homes in Southington as well as in Newington. Both areas seem like a short commute to Berlin, where we would be working. Can anyone provide us with some advice as to which of these two towns would be considered more desirable ( schools are very important, as we have two elementary school aged children).
Are there any other areas (not to rural) we should consider within a 20 mile radius of Berlin? (shopping, schools, family activities, etc..)
Folks are recommending Glastonbury and Farmington? Any thoughts on these?
Both Southington and Newington are very nice towns. They are mostly middle class. Newington is more of a direct suburb of Hartford while Southington is a bit further out and will have people tied to Waterbury, Meriden New Haven or New Britain. Newington would most likely offer the easiest commute since it is right next to Berlin and there would be no highway commuting involved. Both Newington and Southington school systems perform above the state average on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. The links below will provide you with more information.
As for Farmington and Glastonbury, these are more upscale communities than Newington or Southington. They are among the most desirable suburbs of Hartford, have excellent schools and would be more pricey than Newington or Southington but they still have a wide range of housing options. Only you can decide if they are better for you. I would suggest visiting all of these towns to see which is more to your liking. Jay
I don't know about Newington but Southington is a very family friendly town with lots of events and activities for the kids. They have a great Apple Harvest Festival once a year, a touch a truck for the kids, and at least 2 parades a year i believe. The public schools are also good.
How about Rocky Hill? About as upscale as Newington, maybe a tiny bit more so, but not quite like Farmington and Glastonbury. Also (true of Newington too) lots of rentals/apts you could live in for say a year and see what it's all like before you commit to a purchase. Pretty easy commute to Berlin and very good schools. Also maybe Wethersfield though it's closer to Hartford/further from Berlin but still in the same general vicinity.
Well, both of these towns are nice, suburban towns with good schools and both are family friendly. The only real difference is Southington is bigger than Newington (44,000 vs. 30,000, respectively) and I think it would be a bit of a further commute to Berlin from Southington. They both share a border with that town, but if you live in Newington, you can commute to Berlin using the turnpike which might be quicker than driving through Southington to get there. A lot of Newington is laid out in a street grid pattern, so alot of the neighborhoods are walkable.

Please help!!
Southington has easy access to most major highways through central connecticut and very easy access to Berlin. Schools are great....and we have a super YMCA in town. Great community. tp
Have you looked in Berlin, itself? Why commute? I mean, if I could afford to live in Southington, I could afford Berlin...so I'd stay closer to work.
That being said, they are all nice towns so maybe just get the house you like best. Personally, I wouldn't go as far as Glastonbury-you can do just as nice in Southington and not have to go over the river everyday.
