At traffic light intersection, if you want to go left and there's more than one car waiting to go straight, do you give right-of-way to the first car only, or do you wait for other cars to go straight before you turn left?

I wait until theres an opening. I believe the cars going straight have the right of way.

You have to wait for ALL the cars going straight as they have the right of way. You must wait until there is space for you to go without them having to stop.

Yes, the left turner never has the right of way, unless you have a green arrow, of course.

Yeah, this question doesn't make much sense. As the left turner, you aren't the one "giving" right of way to anyone. If you turn left after the first car, you'll be hit by the second car.

He must drive in NY a lot. If I am going straight after a red light, without fail the person waiting to turn left in front of me will always cut in front and risk getting hit (and give me a nasty look of course if I honk). Got to love NYers! Even 80 year olds do it. It is truly odd.

However, what is more disturbing is that two people on this thread weren't sure. This one is pretty basic.

I was thinking the same thing. Very chilling that these people drive on the same roads as you and me.

In any state I've ever driven in the law is that all left turn traffic must yield to oncoming traffic untill there is space and time to safely make the turn. Unless of course there is a left turn arrow.
Even at a two way stop sign intersection, oncoming traffic has the right of way over left turners.
At a 4 way stop intersecton, the car that reaches the stop sign first has the right of way. If two cars reach the stop at the same time, the car to the right has the right of way.
