Oh thank goodness you pointed that out! 'rediculas' twice in one thread. ouch!

I'm all for reading everyones thoughts & opinions on things. It wouldn't be the crazy wonderful world we live in if we all thought the same.

Thanks for sharing everyone, it's fascinating.

I know my son can barely contain himself at the moment. Lollies are so important to a 9YO (& his mum who will raid his bag when he finally goes to bed)

Is it a public holiday there?

No it is not a public holiday. It is just one we celebrate with fun activities. Jay

And correct me if I'm wrong but the parent(s) should do something exciting for the kids every week at least without using halloween as an excuse for kids to have fun..

P.S- look into the history of how Halloween got started.
I know the history of Halloween. It does not really matter. It is an occasion for people to have some fun. what is wrong with that? In a world where so much bad is going on, we really could use a little fun. If that means dressing up in costumes and treat or treating and scaring people a bit, who cares.

As for the purpose of this forum, it is to help people learn about Connecticut. It is not for someone to go off on their own oipinions unless those opinions are specifically asked for. One person can make a difference in what people think. A poster may think that there are a lot of others out there with the same opinions. I am glad that is not the case for this post. Jay

When I was younger (like elementary school age) my neighborhood was full of kids around the same age which was great. We lived on the Plainville/Bristol line so my side of the street went to Bristol schools, and literally across the street they went to Plainville, but anyways, we all used to play together...hide and seek, baseball, kickball, ride our bikes around, etc.

Another aspect to Halloween are Harvest Partys. Many people of faith who do not feel comfortable celebrating the holiday have harvest parties at their churches. Some still dress up for fun, some don't but it's usually a good time with good food, music, dancing, singing, games etc.

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I traveled throughout New England over the past 2 weeks to see how people celebrate differently. I was in Maine over the weekend and I saw trick-or-treaters walking the streets during the middle of the afternoon on Saturday, Oct. 30th. This is not the norm but from speaking to friends I heard that some neighborhood associations decided to celebrate Halloween on Saturday and forego trick-or-treating & celebrations on Sunday. Most of my friends attended house parties on Sat. rather than Sun., too. The running joke this year has been that Halloween was "officially" moved to the last Saturday in October.

It did appear that trick-or-treating dropped significantly in the areas where I live and have lived. In Bridgeport my parents used to get 150-200 visitors from 2000-2005, but this year they only got 40. In Greenwich I noticed a significant drop in trick-or-treaters over the past 3 years. I saw many more costumed teens walking in groups (but not trick-or-treating) than I ever have in the past. Halloween seems to have become a little less popular with parents over the past few years, but I would be willing to bet it's because the economy is poor and people are holding off on buying decorations and (in many cases) even buying candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters. Here's hoping excitement rebuilds over the next few years!

On JViello's point, Halloween is the American version of Samhein and it was originally celebrated to commemorate the day of the year when the veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest. Costumes are thought to have been worn to prevent the Devil from knowing who is human and who isn't when he walks the Earth on Halloween. I have a friend who is very religious and attends a Harvest Party every year; it is much like a regular Halloween party except it excludes decorations of witches/devils/etc. If you are uncomfortable with the history of Halloween, you could still have a great time at a church event.

We had more kids than ever this year. I was excited to see how popular trick-or-treating still is, where I live anyway.
