Hi everyone,
I'm from Rhode Island and have recently been considering a move. I was wondering what the best towns in eastern Connecticut would be for a young couple wanting to start a family. Me and my fiance both work in the medical field. Most likely we would get an apartment in or near the town of our choice, for a year or so, to see if we like it. We're hoping for the typical things, low crime, friendly people, good schools. As I already stated, we would like the town to be on the eastern side of the state, for a shorter traveling distance to visit family in RI. Any informatin would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

The eastern part of the state is pretty rural, do you already have jobs somewhere? I would wait and find jobs first in all honesty. Also, what would you budget be for housing and what kind of apartment are you looking for?

We would definitely wait until we have jobs to move. I was just wondering what areas/towns of eastern Connecticut are the best, so we can start in those areas when looking for jobs. As for an apartment, we'd be looking for a one bedroom, hopefully no more than $900 a month.

What part of R.I are you located in now, and how far east would you want to go? Also, what reasons are you coming to CT for?

Just asking to have a better response in the towns to suggest.

Yes, it sounds like you just want to move across the border but it's not clear what you're expecting to be moving away from vs moving to...

The towns along I-395 (Putnam, Killingly, Plainfield, Griswold) have apartments and some population. To the west of those are some very rural towns out in the woods - think Foster.

Most of the jobs are likely found in southeastern rather than northeastern CT.

I am assuming you want to move to the Norwich-New London-Groton area which is where most of the jobs would be. towns that are nice are East Lyme, Waterford, Montville and Salem. I also like Stonington and North Stonington. I am not sure how many rentals there are in these towns but you may want to check Groton or parts of New London which has a greater slecetion. Jay

Hope you're a trust fund baby. That's what it takes to get a decent place in Stonington.

If you must go to eastern CT near the RI border, definitely look in southeastern CT (New London county). They are generally more desirable to live in and not overly rural. This area also contains a heck of a lot more job opportunities than northeatern CT (Windham county). Apartment wise, your best bet would probably be Groton. I-95 also goes through Groton, which allows you quick access to RI to see your family.
