My husband and I currently rent a condo in West Hartford, and we're looking to buy a house. We think we've narrowed it down to West Hartford, Avon, or Farmington, and we're looking for advice! I currently work in WH, but my husband works in Bristol. Anyone know of the commute from Avon or Farmington to Bristol? How about to WH from those places?

From what we've found, most of the houses in WH are much older and the taxes are higher. However, there seems to be more to do. I would really appreciate your opinion!!!

Well if you're working in Bristol, then Farmington or WH would probably work best - easier commute since I-84 runs thru both towns. Commuting to Bristol, I'm thinking the drive there would be easier since you're not driving toward Hartford (don't quote me on this though.) In Farmington you will probably get more for your money for a house and the property taxes will be a bit less, but there's less to do there. Still, it's a great town and if you have children the schools are top-notch (and probably have an edge over WH). IMO its best to look at these 2 towns and judge for yourself. Good luck!

Keep in mind, the commute from Avon to West Hartford may involve traveling over Avon Mountain depending where you work. I am not sure if you have ever traveled this road but it can be an adventure to say the least.

That said I do not think the commute from any of these towns would be really bad since you would mostly avoid the highways. I do not think I would base my choice on commute. I would look at the area and see which one suits you best. West Hartford is a mature suburban community with a lot to do. Avon is somewhat quiet and more isolated with less to do. Farmington is kind of in the middle. Only you can decide which is what you like best. Keep in mind too that Avon and Farmington are not far from West Hartford so you could still enjoy what you like there when you want. Jay
