Hi Everyone,
We are considering being stationed at the New London Submarine Base in about 2 years. My husband attented Sub school there about 6 yrs ago and has only said that it was a rural area.
I'm wondering what are good cities to live in within about a 30 minute commute to the base. Most likely we would have to leave in base housing because the housing costs seem very high in comparison to our are in Virginia.
How are the schools? Are they passing?

connecticut is known for its good schools. Most towns offer a quality education, some are better than others but still very good. The area is not entirely rural. Towns to consider may be Waterford, Groton, Stonington, North Stonington and Montville. Good luck, Jay

The sub base is in Groton-population 46,000. New London has around 35,000- and there are many towns next door that have 10-15,000 population. Norwich 15 miles away has 38,000- so it is not a rural area. However rolling country side and forests are not far away- so there is a rural look not 'far away'.

Thank you for clarifying that the area is not "rural". Our area has more like 100-300k people per city....maybe that's why he used the term rural. I have always heard great things about Connecticut. Can anyone recommend any cities surrounding the base that are low in crime and good schools?

If you look east of Groton/New London towards the state line and a bit north you'll find some more suburban type places... it'll be a bit more expensive but the commute wont be so bad.
